National system for household hazardous waste

2024-08-02

The National system for household hazardous waste is a green service of BalBok Engineering AD for the municipalities in Bulgaria since 2012, which ensures on a national level separate collection of household hazardous waste directly from the generators - households and small businesses, and comprehensive treatment of the accepted waste at the sites of "BalBok Engineering" AD in the most economically efficient way and in full compliance with the environmental legislation.

The separate collection of hazardous waste is carried out according to a schedule by experienced and professionally trained personnel in specialized mobile points, with the possibility of collection being carried out on request, and ensures the safety of citizens, prevention of pollution and accidents.

The system has a single national phone number 0700 11 750 and an information portal, through which information is provided, as well as a sign that is provided for the use of the municipalities included in the NSHHW.

The green service was launched in the capital city of Sofia and at the moment, NSHHW covers 40 municipalities around the country.

The creation of the model for separate collection and recovery/disposal of household hazardous waste was reported by BalBok Engineering AD at DepoTech 2012 in Leoben, Austria.

In 2023 within the system, we accepted and treated the waste collected in the pilot municipal centers for the collection of hazardous household waste in Levski, Sozopol, Saedinenie and Shumen, built under the Bulgarian-Swiss Cooperation Program.

The main groups of hazardous waste generated in households are:

  • Mercury and mercury containing appliances
  • Varnish and paint materials
  • Household detergents and chemicals
  • Ink and used printing materials
  • Pharmaceutical products (medicines with expired sell-by date)

The system is an innovative service that guarantees compliance with national and European environmental legislation in the field of waste management. When hazardous waste is separated from the general household waste stream, it significantly reduces the risk to people's health and the occurrence of accidents. On the other hand, mixing them with other waste disrupts the organization of work in the collection and disposal of solid household waste, as well as in the separate collection and utilization of recyclable fractions of paper, metal, glass and plastics.

Joining the system, eliminates the need to service expensive mobile centers, as the entire organization, incl. provision of information to citizens, separate collection, treatment and disposal, as well as the preparation and processing of documents accompanying the activity, including permits, is undertaken by BalBok Engineering AD in compliance with the most modern environmental standards.

For the creation and implementation of the System, BalBok Engineering AD was awarded an Innovative Enterprise of the Year in the area "Green Innovation" at the Tenth National Innovation Forum, held on December 16, 2014 in Sofia.
